5 Questions You Should Be Asked During a Design Consultation

To get great results from a design consultation, the designer needs to know you and your household needs. Expect to be asked the following five questions, or variations thereof, when renovating the home.

Special note: If your interior designer doesn’t ask you these questions, that doesn’t mean they’re bad. Everyone has their own approach— find a designer whose approach and vision you enjoy.

  1. What styles do you love / What styles do you hate? There should be several questions that your designer poses during your design consultation that get to the root of your preferred design aesthetic. They should be asking you about what you like conceptually when it comes to interior design and how you’ve chosen to style your home. If you don’t feel adept at describing your style, bring along some inspirational photos showing the kind of look you want to achieve.
  2. How does the room get used throughout the day? To understand the needs of your household, your design team should inquire about how the space is used and all of the different activities that occur there so that the final treatment can address any foreseeable needs.
  3. What changes are you looking to make? Your design team needs to know the extent to which you are making changes in your home because the scope of the project can affect everything from budgeting to timelines. Are you getting new shades for one room or the entire house? Are you just grabbing some new furniture or is this going to be a whole room makeover? Be open when your design team asks about your intentions so the whole team works towards the same goal.
  4. What do you consider expensive? Budget is something you should discuss as it’s incredibly pertinent to the home renovations you’ll be getting. So, whether they ask for a price range or your general feeling on cost appropriateness for the project, money should be discussed during your design consultation.
  5. Who lives in the home? When the question comes up about who lives in the home, be thorough. Are there children, pets, or regular visitors with special needs? There can be safety concerns to remember or other design requirements that your team needs to be aware of.
